Abstract

983,501. Gas-blast circuit-breakers. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. March 22, 1961 [March 23, 1960], No. 10291/60. Heading H2B. In a gas-blast circuit-breaker having a main circuit interrupter 12 in parallel with a resistor 13 and a resistor circuit interrupter 14, the opening of a single exhaust valve 18 is effective to close the resistor circuit interrupter 14 and then to open the main interrupter 12 and the subsequent closing of the valve is effective to re-open the resistor circuit interrupter 14. When the circuit-breaker shown is to be opened, a rod 58 is moved upwards and through levers 60, 61 operates a valve 65 to supply compressed gas to the space 75 below the operating piston 41 of the exhaust valve 18. The valve 18 opens causing a drop in pressure in the spaces 20, 43 so that compressed gas supplied from the spaces 21, 36, through pipes 40, 54, acts on a piston 51 to close the contacts 50, 48 of the resistor circuit interrupter 14. The loss of pressure in the space 20 results in a loss of pressure in the space 72 to the right of a piston 29, so that compressed gas supplied through pipes 70, 68 to the space 69 moves the piston 29 to open the main contacts 25, 27. This opening of the main contacts causes linkage 31, 63, 61 to reset the valve 65 to reclose the exhaust valve 18. The main contacts 25, 27 are maintained open by an over-centre toggle spring 34, but the increase in pressure in the space 43 permits a spring 52 to re-open the contacts 50, 47, gas flowing into a closed space 46 through an aperture 47 in the contact 48 rapidly de-ionizing the arc gap. To reclose the main contacts, the rod 58 is moved downwards to operate a valve 64 to vent the space 69 to atmosphere so that the piston 29 is moved by the pressure in space 72 to close the contacts 27, 25. These contacts are maintained closed by the spring 34 when the linkage 31, 63, 61 resets the valve 64. Specification 983,502 is referred to.
