Abstract

971,294. Gas blast switches. BROWN, BOVERI & CO. Ltd. March 28, 1963 [March 30, 1962; April 26, 1962], No. 12275/63. Heading H2B. Valves 111, 122 controlling the flow of blast gas to circuit-breakers, not shown, are located on live parts of the breakers and controlled from earthed parts thereof by insulating tensioned rods 110, 118, the valves being opened in the direction of flow by the pressure gas. The interior of insulators 112, 116 are in communication through 102 with a pressure gas reservoir. Application of high pressure to the underside of a piston 106 allows the pressure gas to force valves 111, 122 away from their seats to release blast gas to the breakers which momentarily open the contacts, series isolators effecting voltage insulation. In another embodiment (Fig. 1, not shown), the rods operate the valves, through suitable linkages, to supply pressure to pistons which open the contacts. Various arrangements are shown for controlling the insulating rods such as a differential piston (Fig. 1), a simple spring-biased piston (Fig. 2, not shown), an electromagnet (not shown), or the latching arrangement of Fig. 3 in which to open the breaker, a holding lever 36 is rotated, as by an electromagnetic trip, to release a member 34 from a latch 35 whereupon the pressure gas moves the rods as before. Closing is performed by applying pressure gas to a piston 40.
