Abstract

606,860. Gas-blast switches. NIJLAND, H. A. H. Jan. 21, 1946, No. 2009. Convention date, Feb. 19, 1942. [Class 38 (v)] A contact 3 of a pneumatically-actuated, gasblast circuit-breaker, is movable by a spring- returned piston 20 to provide an arc-extinguishing gap, and is connected with lost-motion to a rod 16 movable by an operating-mechanism (not shown) to provide an isolating-gap, and also to re-close the breaker. In Fig. 1, the contact 3 is joined by an insulator 14 to a rod 15, which is coupled to the rod 16 by a pin 17 and slot 18, and biassed therefrom by a spring 19. The contacts separate when the piston 20 slides into engagement with a shoulder 23 on the rod 15 and drives the latter upwards until arrested by an abutment 24. When the arc has been extinguished, the rod 16 is moved by its operating-mechanism to provide the isolating-gap, during which movement the gasblast is cut-off. The rods 16, 15, the insulator 14, and the contact 3 are together withdrawable through the end of the breaker. In Fig. 2, the piston 20 has a boss 23 closing the end 31 of the cylinder 21, whereby it is prevented from sliding on contact 3 until an adequate blastpressure is built up. When the full working- face of the piston is exposed, the piston snaps against the shoulder 23 and moves the contact 3 rapidly until arrested by the abutment 24.
