Abstract

983,268. Advancing mine roof supports. DOWTY MINING EQUIPMENT Ltd. Oct. 2, 1963 [Oct. 10, 1962], No. 38396/62. Heading F1P. Each of a series of hydraulic jacks 9 Fig. 1 serves to advance a portion of a conveyer 1 towards the coal face 2 and are so arranged that after operation of the first jack 9 the remainder are sequentially operated by the attainment of a predetermined operating condition, e.g., degree of extension or pressure developed of the preceding jack. One end of each jack cylinder 36 Fig. 4 is pivoted at 11 to the sole beam 5 of a prop assembly 4 whilst the other end is enclosed by a sleeve 12 having a closed end against which the jack rod 13 pushes. Each sole beam also carries a single acting jack 7 by which the beam is pulled towards the face 2; props 6 having been released. Each assembly4 having a jack 9 is accompanied by two other assemblies with jacks 7 but without jacks 9. An assembly of valve units A-D Fig. 3 control fluid to and from jacks 7, 9 through a supply line 15 and return line 16 and units E, F control props 6. In operation and to advance the first jack 9 pressure is admitted through a line 28 to valve B which pivots a lever 25 counterclockwise to open valve A and allow pressure to reach a line 34 leading to the pushing side of said first jack 9. A valve 45 is opened by a predetermined pressure rise on the pushing side of jack 9 and connects line 34 with a second line 28 leading to the valve B of the second jack 9 which when advanced opens an associated valve 45 thereby connecting line 34 with a third line 28 leading to the valve B of the next jack 9 and so on. When all the jacks have been advanced the props 6 of each group of roof supports 4 are released in turn, jacks 7 actuated thereby pulling supports 4 towards the conveyer, jack 9 is retracted and the props re-set. To this end pressure is admitted to a pilot line 23 leading to a valve unit C which rocks lever 26 clockwise to operate valve D thereby connecting supply line 15 to a line 35 leading to the pulling side of jack 7 and to retracting side of jack 9. Line 35 is also connected to valve F which rocks a lever 27 clockwise to open valve E and connect supply line 15 to a line 31 leading to a valve 32 in the pilot line 23 and which is thus opened to allow access of pressure in line 23 to the valve C of the next assembly.
