Abstract

A steel which is age hardenable in the martensitic state comprises: .Ni.14 -16.0% .Mo.4.6- 5.2% .Co.8.5- 9.5% .Ti.0.1- 0.8% .Al.0.1- 1.2% .V.0 - 3.0% .Nb.0 - 5.4% .Ta.0 -10.5% .C.0 - 0.03% .Mn.0 - 0.2% .Si.0 - 0.2% .B.0 - 0.01% .Zr.0 - 0.1% the balance, apart from impurities and residual deoxidizing elements, being iron. The Ti, Al, V, Nb, and Ta are so correlated that 5 X Ti% + 3Al% + V% + 0.5 X Nb% + 0.25 X Ta% =4.5-7 and V% + 0.5 X Nb% + 0.25 X Ta% is not more than 3. Up to 5% of chromium may replace an equal weight of nickel. The steel is preferably deoxidized with Ca and up to 0.1% may be present as a residual amount. The steel may be modified by the addition of W (up to 7%), Be (up to 1%) and P (up to 0.5%). Steels according to the invention may be hot worked solution treated at 815-985 DEG C., cooled to transform the matrix to the martensitic condition and then aged at 425-540 DEG C.
