An injection-moulding machine comprises a screw 6<SP>1</SP> arranged for rotary and rectilinear motion in an injection cylinder 4<SP>1</SP> fed with thermoplastic material from a hopper 7<SP>1</SP>, the rotational speed and/or the counter-pressure exerted on the screw being greater during the last part, or the first and last parts, of the retration stroke of the screw as compared with the remainder of said stroke whereby corresponding temperature variations occur in the charge of material throughout the length of cylinder 4<SP>1</SP> due to heat generated by friction. As shown in Fig. 7, the screw 6<SP>1</SP> has a shank 20 attached to a piston 17 slidably housed in a cylinder 16 and axially displaced by pressure-fluid supplied by a pump 19 through a valve 26 actuated by a control device 24. The shank is provided with splines in sliding engagement with a gear 50 meshing with gears 15 rotated by a motor 14 which is connected to device 24. The counterpressure on the piston and/or the speed of motor 14 is controlled by switches 22 connected to device 24 and actuated by a disc 21 attached to shank 20. Alternatively, as shown in Fig. 8, the shank 37 of the screw engages with a thrust bearing 47 in one end of an axially-slidable member 37<SP>1</SP> which is displaced by a worm 31 and worm-wheel 32 coupled by linkages 33, 34 to a plate 38 fixed to the other end of said member, the plate being coupled by tension springs 39 to pins 40 slidably mounted in a fixed plate 42 and having screw-threads 43 engaging with nuts 44. When the screw is retracted nuts 44 abut plate 42 before the end of the stroke such that the screw is subjected to a counter-pressure by springs 39. The screw is rotatable by a motor 29 coupled to shank 37 through gearing similar to that shown in Fig. 7.
