An injection moulding machine has mechanism for imparting rotary and linear motion to a feed-screw 18, this mechanism comprising a piston-and-cylinder device 152, 150, one part of which is secured to the feed-screw for rotary and linear motion therewith, and connected with motor means for rotating it about the longitudinal axis of the cylinder. As shown, the piston 152 is fixed and the feed-screw 18 is secured to the cylinder 150 which is rotated by three hydraulic rotary motors 118 through gearing 151, 160. Linear motion of the cylinder is effected by pressure fluid introduced through a pipe 157. A cam 37 attached to the feedscrew is arranged to operate a limit switch mounted on a fitting 120 (Fig. 1) whereby rotation of the feed-screw is automatically stopped by an electrically operated hydraulic control valve (not shown) when the feed-screw is retracted. Actuating mechanism (Figs. 6, 7, not shown) for the limit switch is adjustable to vary the retraction of the feed-screw. The machine is mounted on a slidable carriage 114 which is coupled with a ram 16 so that the nozzle 21 can be withdrawn from a platen 12 on which the mould (not shown) is mounted. A hopper is provided to supply moulding material through a throat 24. Heating units are arranged in an outer sleeve 19 for the chamber 17.
