Abstract

A cemented carbide tool, roll or structural member is produced by filling a metal tube such as stainless steel or nickel with a powder mixture of WC and/or TiC with Ni, Co or Fe, sealing the tube ends and swaging and heat treating the composite tube to sinter the cemented carbide. The powders should have an average particle size of 3 microns. The swaging may be cold or cold swaging may be followed by a hot swaging at 1200 DEG C. Heat treatment after swaging is at 1200 DEG C. To form a cutting tool, reamer or twist drill from the sintered composite, the cladding tube is partially removed and the exposed cemented carbide is formed to the required shape.
