Abstract

879,590. Powder metallurgy. CHESTERFIELD TUBE CO. Ltd. Jan. 28, 1960 [Feb. 27, 1959], No. 6842/59. Class 82(1) [Also in Group XXII] A sintered extruded article is formed by charging sinterable powders such as a boron bearing steel powder into an open ended container 10, closing the open end with a disc 11, heating the powder and container which is then compacted in an extrusion press at a temperature high enough to sinter the powder, and then applying further pressure to extrude the container and sintered body through the extrusion die. The steel powder may contain 4% to 11% of boron and may be precompacted before charging into the container. The disc 11 which may be stainless steel can either have its outer end flush with the end of the container 10 (Fig. 1) in which case an intermediate pad 13 having a shoulder 15 effects the initial compaction until the shoulder 15 engages the container wall, further pressure then resulting in extrusion of the powder and container, or a thicker disc 17 (Fig. 4) and an intermediate pad 18 with no shoulder may be used. A tubular article may be produced by securing an internal tube in the container, packing the powder around the tube so that a mandrel on the press ram enters the tube on compaction and extrusion. After extrusion the outer sheath of the container material e.g. mild steel and the inner lining of the tube material can be removed from the sintered compact by pickling or machining.
