D 1,4 - 3 - ketosteroids free from selenium are prepared by treating a selenium-containing steroid with copper in an organic solvent. The selenium-containing steroid is itself prepared by dehydrogenating a 3-keto steroid saturated in the 1- and/or 4-position(s) with a selenium compound having a dehydrogenating action. Specified organic solvents are glacial acetic acid and diethylene glycol, and detailed examples illustrate the preparation of D 1,4-choletadien-3-one, 1-dehydro-testosterone propionate, and 1-dehydro-17a -methyl testosterone.
