Abstract

The invention comprises D-homo-D 4,17(17a)-pregnadiene-3, 20-dione, D-homo-D 17(17a)-5a -pregnen-3b -ol-20-one, and D-homo-D 5,17(17a)-pregnadiene-3, 21-diol-20-one, and the preparation of D 17(17a)-unsaturated-D-homo-20 -ketopregnenes by treating the corresponding 16, 17a -methylene-20-keto-pregnanes with a carboxylic anhydride such as acetic anhydride, in the presence of a strong acid catalyst such as p-toluenesulphonic acid or perchloric acid, and hydrolysing the resulting 20-enol ester. The above process may be modified in that instead of using a 16, 17a -methylene-20-keto-steroid as the reactant the corresponding D 11-pyrazolino-41,51:16,17-compound is used. In the examples the following are prepared by the above process D-homo-D 5,17 (17a) - pregnadien - 3 BETA-ol-20-one. (This compound may then be acetylated to form the corresponding 3-acetoxy compound or oxidized to form D-homo-D 4,17(17a)-pregnadiene-3, 20-dione which may also be obtained by the above process), D-homo-D 17(17a)-5a -pregnen-3b -ol-20-one, and D-homo-D 5,17(17a)-pregnadiene-3, 21-diol-20-one.
