980,221. Identifying cable cores. WEDNESBURY TUBE CO. Ltd. Aug. 1, 1962 [Aug. 5, 1961], No. 28521/61. Drawings to Specification. Heading H1A. In an electrical cable of the type comprising at least two conductor cores extending through a tubular metal sheath and separated from each other by powdered insulating material, the cores are identified by providing at least one of the cores with a recessed surface. This recess may be a continuous V formed by a beak in the die forming the conductor or it may be a series of discontinuous indentations formed by passing the conductor to be marked between a pair of wheels at least one of which carries projections on its surface. Where more than one core is to be marked, differently shaped recesses may be provided in different conductors, e.g. one set may be rectangular as viewed from the side of the core and another circular. The cable is filled with powdered magnesium oxide which passes down spaces between a compacting ram and the sheath. This compacting fills the recess with the powder, so assisting in the identification. The indentations may be filled with a different insulating material which can be retained in the V to maintain the shape of the core for sealing through a bush. Alternatively, they may be filled with a further metal, e.g. a tin-lead alloy or aluminium, so as not to reduce the core cross-section.
