Mineral deposits on a sea bead are sampled by pushing a cutting shoe 6, at the end of an extensible and/or flexible multi-conduit pipe 1, 2, into the deposit and supplying water down conduit 5 through jets 9 to entrain and carry deposit up conduit 4, secondary water supplies being delivered to between jets 9 and the cutting edge of shoe 6. As shown, pipes 10, 11 in annular conduit 5 supply water to diffusing ports 14 and ports 17, 18 respectively, the three water supplies being separately conrtolled. Alternatively the whole water supply could come down conduit 5 and be divided between jets 9, ports 14, 17, 18 by valves situated on distributer nut 8 and remote controlled electrically or hydraulically. Pipe 1, 2 may be extended by adding sections, and shoe 6 may be forced downwards by oscillatory or percussive means. The secondary water flow serves to provide a clean water plug behind a sample, to dilute a sample and/or to fill the vacuum created by jets 9 so that only deposits within the periphery of shoe 6 are sampled.
