In a motor vehicle wherein on increase of vehicle load the variation of axle load on the one axle is greater than on the other axle, the springing of the one axle has a linear rate and of the other axle has a progressive rate. For example, a van with a front engine and drive would have a progressive rate front suspension and a linear rate rear suspension. The progressive rate suspension is preferably softer than the linear rate suspension.
