Abstract
977,277. Bearings; cams. GENERAL DYNAMICS CORPORATION. March 12, 1963 [March 23, 1962], No.9789/63 Headings F2A and F2K. An apparatus has two members each of which has a bearing surface that is arranged to slide over the other bearing surface to produce a displacement of one or both members in a direction normal to the two bearing surfaces, the two bearing surfaces having a layer of anti-friction material between them. In an embodiment, a wedge 10, Fig. 1, is positioned between two loadbearing members 12, 14 and is driven by a drive 15 including a linear hydraulic actuator 16. The drive 15 is mounted on a stationary support 18 and is attached to the member 12 by a member 20 and fasteners 22. The member 14 is positioned in a bearing 28 which is carried by stationary supports 24, 26. A layer of anti - friction material 36 is attached to each of the bearing surfaces 38, 40 of the wedge 10. The layer 36 may be a fabric made of fibres of tetrafluoroethylene interwoven with fibres of cotton or glass, for example; or the layer 36 may be a material comprising a porous metallic matrix layer, a bearing surface layer of P.T.F.E. extending into the pores of the matrix, the layer of P.T.F.E. having dispersed cavities in its surface filled with a non-resinous solid lubricant such as molybdenum disulphide. In another embodiment, pressurized fluid replaces the material 36 used in the first embodiment. Films 52, 53, Fig. 3, are formed between the bearing surfaces 38, 40 of the wedge 10 and between the respective bearing surfaces 42, 44 of the members 12, 14. The fluid is supplied by a pump 54 and is conveyed through ducts 56, 58 and passages 60, 62 to the bearing surfaces 42, 44.
