Abstract

976,988. Electron beam apparatus; travelling wave tubes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. May 12, 1961, No. 17485/61. Heading H1D. An electron bunching device includes electron gun electrodes for projecting a ribbon-shaped beam along a rectilinear path towards an electron collector, and, positioned in the order given between the electron gun electrodes and the electron collector: a first pair of beam deflection plates 6, 7 for deflecting the electron beam periodically to either side of the rectilinear path in directions normal to the width of the ribbon; an aperture plate 2 having slots parallel to the width of the ribbon arranged for alternate passage of the beam through a slot and interception of the beam; a second pair of beam deflection plates 9, 10 constructed and arranged for counteraction of the beam deflection produced by the first pair; and a pair of beam alignment plates 11, 12 constructed and arranged for realignment of the electron beam into a rectilinear path; the device also including means 4 for utilizing the electromagnetic field associated with the electron bunches produced by passage of the beam through the aperture plate. The aperture plate may be positioned after the second pair of beam deflection plates. The deflection plates may be in the form of flattened helix slow wave structures and are preferably fed with radio-frequency signals of a triangular waveform. The electromagnetic field utilization means may be a multi-slot antenna as shown, or a millimeter wave magnetic undulator, Fig. 3 (not shown), in which the cylindrical electron bunches follow a sinusoidal path under the action of magnetic fields and are subsequently deflected off axis to an electron collector.
