Abstract

833,687. Travelling-wave tubes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Dec. 28, 1956 [Dec. 30, 1955], No. 39447/56. Class 39(1). [Also in Group XL(b)] The delay line of a travelling wave tube consists solely of a stack of laminations forming a hollow waveguide loaded with inter-digitated elements and the laminations are supported and aligned by means of two or more rods 6 passing through apertures in the corners of the laminations. The support rods pass through holes in magnetic shield 8 Fig. 1, and plate 9 to secure plate 9, which holds the gun via three ceramic rods 10 to shield 8, while the other ends of the rods extend into magnetic shield 11 on which is supported the molybdenum collector 12, slanted to reduce secondary emission. The laminations are rectangular and comprise three different shapes arranged consecutively, A, Fig. 2, having a long and a short projection 24a, 29 respectively, B having two short projections 25, 26, C having a short and a long projection 28, 24 respectively, the long projections having apertures 27 for passage of the electron beam. Input and output waveguides are connected by tapered ridges 14, 17 to the delay line, the ridges being connected to extensions of the laminations and a second lamination 5c being connected to the opposite wall of the output guide to improve the impedance match. The laminations are formed by stamping, and the envelope 1 is of metal (or possibly of dielectric material). The beam is focused by a permanent or electromagnet 19 in which it is held in correct spaced relation by pole piece 20. Due to imperfections in the stamping equipment, the laminations may be stamped out as parallelograms but this can be corrected if the laminations of group A are reversed end for end with respect to the laminations of group C.
