Abstract

1,049,409. Travelling wave tubes. LITTON INDUSTRIES Inc. Oct. 23, 1964 [Oct. 29, 1963], No. 43378/64. Heading H1D. A travelling wave tube has a dispersive slow wave structure and a beam velocity which varies in different sections of the delay line in order to obtain constant amplification over the bandwidth of the tube. A crossed-field forward wave device is used, the ratio E/B being varied so as to vary the beam velocity. In one form, Fig. 12, the sole electrode 22 is flexible, and the transverse electric field between the sole electrode and the slow wave structure 20 is varied by varying the distance between the electrodes by adjustment of screws. Alternatively the electric field is varied by either splitting the sole electrode or slow wave structure into discrete electrically insulated sections and applying an adjustable potential to each. The transverse magnetic field may be varied by providing a number of polepieces extending from one U-shaped permanent magnet and adjusting the magnetic gap between these and a common polepiece, or a plurality of separately energizable electromagnets may be used.
