Abstract

975,739. Applying closures. METAL CLOSURES Ltd. April 26, 1963 [April 27, 1962], No. 16240/62. Heading B8T. A container with a screwthreaded neck is sealed to withstand an internal pressure of about 120 p.s.i. by an aluminium closure blank 5, Fig. 2, having a thickness within the range 0.008 to 0.012 inches, its inside top surface being covered by a thin layer of flowed-in gasket material, e.g. polyvinyl chloride compound, which increases to a thicker annulus 10; the blank is pressed down on to the container top and, whilst so held, its skirt 7 is reduced above the neck thread to compress the gasket material against the container neck and a thread is formed in the skirt by inwardly deforming it. The closure blank, which initially has a recessed band of knurling 6 and a bead 17 is urged on to the container top by a two-part pressure block, Fig. 4, comprising a holder 18 and a spring-urged plunger 19. The gasket material is preferably applied as a flowable viscous composition on the middle of the top of the closure blank when inverted, the blank is then spun to spread the composition to the angle between top and skirt, and the gasket material is then cured.
