Abstract

975,244. Retractable fountain pens. PAIROTTO MAN-NEN-HITSU KABUSHIKI KAISHA. Feb. 18, 1963 [April 30, 1962; Oct. 22, 1962], No. 6424/63. Heading B6P. A retractable fountain pen comprises a front barrel portion 1 with a front aperture 2 and a rear barrel portion 16, the two portions being mounted for relative rotation. A fixed cylinder 3 with a linear slot 4 is retained by a guide cylinder 6 fitted in the front barrel portion 1. A shutter blade 9 for closing the aperture 2 has a fixed pin 9a and is slidably fitted in a guide part 8 formed by and between the port barrel 1 and the guide cylinder 6. A rotating cylinder 11 provided with a first cam slot 13 and a second cam slot 12 is mounted between the bent barrel wall and fixed cylinder 3 and is adapted to be rotated by the rear barrel portion 16. The fixed pin 9a of the shutter blade 9 engages with the second cam slot 12 and the linear slot 4 of the fixed cylinder 3, whereby rotation of the cylinder 11 provides forward and rearward movement of the shutter blade 9 in the guide 8 to close off and open the aperture 2. A movable writing unit comprising an integral assembly of a split nib 24, a feed bar 18, a sleeve 25, and an ink reservoir 26, has a pin 25a which engages the first cam-slot 13 and the linear slot 4. Rotation of the cylinder 11 provides projection and retraction of the writing assembly in co-operation with the movement of the shutter blade. The pin 25a may be fixed either to the sleeve 25, the nib 24, a cover for the nib or the reservoir 26, as illustrated in Figs. 13, 18, 19 and 20, respectively (not shown). In a modification, Figs. 16 and 17 (not shown), the guide cylinder 6 has a cover la fitted thereabout within the front barrel portion 1, and the guide part 8 is formed between the cover 1a and the guide cylinder 6. The feed bar 18, Fig. 1, is provided with an overflow arrangement in the form of capillary cells 19 and an ink feed slot 20 and air slot 21 in its longitudinal direction, Fig. 3 (not shown).
