Abstract

975,170. Measuring electrically. RUSTON & HORNSBY Ltd. Feb. 16, 1962 [March 1,1961], No. 7400/61. Heading G1N. Load measuring apparatus comprises a load cell with a rigid body 1 and end closure plates 2, 3, the cell containing a plurality of stress members members 6 each with a plurality of electrical resistance strain gauges (not shown) mounted thereon and connected to indicating equipment, a load to be measured being transmitted to and equally shared between the stress members 6 by means of a single point contact between a loading ball 12 and a floating piston 10, and by further means of point contacts between the piston 10 and the stress members 6. Piston 10 is of a hard steel resistant to bending and is held central by resilient ring seal 11. The point contacts between the piston and the stress members are provided by balls 9 resting in conical recesses 8. Balls 9 and 12 are preferably made of hard carbon chrome steel and members 6 consist of beryllium copper rods or tubes. Four strain gauges are mounted on each member 6, two longitudinally and two transverse to the axis of the member 6.
