Abstract

The invention comprises monoazo dye complexes wherein one atom of chromium is combined with two different monoazo dyes of which at least one contains a radical of formula <FORM:0974403/C4-C5/1> wherein R is an organic radical containing at least one carbon atom and in which at least one of the dyes contains at least one sulphonic acid group. The dyes are prepared by treating a metal free monoazo dye with a 1: 1-chromium complex of a monoazo dye, the dyes being selected so that at least one has the residue of a coupling component of formula <FORM:0974403/C4-C5/2> and at least one of the azo dyes contains at least one sulphonic acid group. Specified values of R are methyl, ethyl, butyl, phenyl, carboxylic acid, carboxylic acid amide or hydrazide and cyano. The dyes may be used to colour wool, silk, leather and synthetic polyamide fibres and may also be used to colour natural and regenerated cellulose fibres in the presence of colourless polyfunctional compounds as described in Specifications 923,162, 929,053 and 934,391. In an example the 1: 1-chromium complex of the dye 1-amino-2-naphthol - 4 - sulphoni acid --> 1 - (3 - sulphophenyl) - 3 - methyl - 5 - pyrazolone is heated in aqueous sodium acetate solution with the dye 4-nitro-2-hydroxy-aniline --> 3-methylpyrazolone-(5). Further examples are specified.
