973,448. Shielded containers for radio-active material. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Sept. 20, 1963 [Oct. 3, 1962], No. 37438/62. Heading B4Q. A container for transporting radio-active materials comprises an inner vessel 1 of dense radiation resisting material, e.g. lead or lead encased in a mild steel sheath, the vessel 1 being sealed by a lid 6 comprising a lead block 7 sandwiched between steel plates 8, a sealing gasket 31 being interposed between the vessel 1 and the upper plate 8. A bridge-piece 9 clamped by nuts 14 secured to a lifting cradle 13 of the vessel 1 normally holds the lid in position. A thermal insulating hardwood case 2 surrounds the vessel 1, this case being in two portions 17, 18, hard felt 19 being interposed between the vessel 1 and case 2. Surrounding the case 2 is a fire-resisting steel drum 3 sealed by a lid 21 and having carrying handles 3. The container may be used as thus far described or it may be used within an outer mild steel drum 4 having a lid 32, the drums 3, 4 being spaced by plywood assemblies 24 ... 29. To provide for pressure relief in case of fire, the drums have holes having mild steel patches 38 soft soldered thereover.
