A container for transporting radioactive material contained within a bottle 5 comprises a lead vessel 1 having a lid 10 hermetically enclosed in a mild steel canister 11 having a lid 12, the canister being thermally insulated by a plurality of discs 13 and annular rings 14 disposed in a mild steel drum 3 having a lid 15. The rings 14 and discs 13 are formed of thermal insulating board, e.g. wood or sugar cane fibreboard.
