Abstract

In a shielded container for transporting radioactive substances, thermal insulation is provided to afford protection against external fire. In Fig. 1, the radio-active substance 5 is surrounded by the lead wall 2 within the steel envelope 3. To provide thermal insulation the bands 9, and slab 10, formed of asbestos, cement composition or a water-saturated substance, are mounted between 2 and 3. Mechanical shocks are absorbed by the lead mass contacting the envelope 3 between the zones 9, 10. In a modification the container is cylindrical. In an alternative form, Fig. 4, a conventional container 28 for transporting radio-active substances, may be mounted inside the concentric steel envelopes 30, 31 which are separated by wood blocks 32 and thermal insulators 33.
