Abstract

973,185. Firearms. FABRIQUE NATIONALE D'ARMES DE GUERRE S.A. Dec. 11, 1962 [Dec. 11, 1961], No. 46790/62. Heading F3C. A barrel 10 fitting on a body 12 having a movable breech block 18, has longitudinal grooves 27 comprised of sides 30, 32 co-operating with longitudinal tracks 24 comprised of sides 26, 28 on the body, the inclined surfaces 28, 32 forming supporting surfaces for the barrel and the vertical surfaces preventing the barrel from being displaced laterally during longitudinal movement. The body 12 also contains a cavity 32 having vertical walls 36 in which are inclined grooves 38. Beneath the barrel 10 is a tenon 42 having a hole 46 receiving a pin 48 (Fig. 1) having flat shoulders 52 which bear on the upper surface of the grooves 38 when the barrel is inserted in the body. To do this the breech block is retracted, the barrel is inserted until the pin 48 engages the grooves 38 and the barrel is drawn forwardly, the pressure on the pin forcing the surfaces 28, 32 together. The barrel is retained in position by a bolt 56 passing through the body 12 and into a screw-thread in the barrel, the bolt being at a smaller angle with respect to the barrel axis than are the grooves 38. Forces acting on the barrel are taken up by the surfaces 28, 32, thus allowing a body of a less hardwearing metal, such as aluminium, to be used.
