Abstract

598,051. Smallarms..JOHNSON, M. M. June 29, 1944, No. 12378. Convention date, May 13, 1943. [Class 119] In an automatic fire-arm comprising lugs 3, 4, Figs. 8 and 9, on each side of the front of the bolt, which transmit the breech pressure to lugs on the receiver, the abutting surfaces of the lugs are inclined so that the breech pressure transmitted to the bolt by a slide S, Fig. 7, moved by gas pressure and a spring, tends to produce rotation of the bolt and thus unlocks the lugs. Also the slide S has a surface 9 which engages the top of the lug 4 and prevents rotation and unlocking until the slide has moved a predetermined distance. The main feature of the invention is an inclined cam surface 11 on the slide S which cams the bolt into locked position and a cam surface 12 which cams it into unlocked position. To counteract the thrust between the surface 9 and the lug 4, the receiver is provided with a flange 14 overlying the slide which also has a depending part 16 preventing outward movement of the slide.
