Abstract

972,219. Variable-speed gear. STONE -WALLWORK Ltd. May 6, 1963 [May 25, 1962], No. 20234/62. Heading F2D. In a disc and roller variable speed friction gear a centrifugal device responsive to input shaft speed engages the disc with the rollers above a predetermined speed and the rollers are connected to the output shaft by planetary gearing. A driving disc 9 is moved along splines 4, on the input shaft 1, against a spring 10 to engage rollers 14 above a predetermined speed by centrifugal rollers 8 in tapered cages 7<SP>1</SP>, 7, respectively, formed in the disc 9 and a reaction disc 5 splined to the input shaft 1. The rollers 14 are carried on substantially radial splined shafts 15, supported in bearings in the casing 3, through holding rings 22 having pins 23 engaged in oblique slots in a disc 26; the disc 26 being rotatable by a non-reversible worm 30 to provide ratio change by radial movement of the rollers. The shafts 15 are rigid with bevel gears 34 meshing a bevel 35 freely supported on the input shaft and integral with a sun-gear 40. The sun 40 meshes a planet gear 41 connected to a second planet 44 engaging, second sun 45 integral with the output shaft 2, the carrier 43 for the planets being fixed to the input shaft 1. The overall ratio of the planetary gear may be such as to provide speeds from zero to that of the input in either direction, or speeds higher than input, at shaft 2.
