Abstract

956,539. Hydro-mechanical variable speed gearing. VOLKSWAGENWERK A.G. Oct. 12, 1962 [Oct. 17, 1961], No. 38647/62. Heading F2D. An epicyclic change-speed gear comprises an hydraulic torque-converter and two threeelement epicyclic gear trains in which the intermeshed planets are on a common carrier to provide three speeds and reverse by individual operation of three brakes and one clutch, the two ring gears and the first sun being controlled by the brakes, the first sun also being clutchable to the converter input shaft and the second sun being connected to the converter turbine. An input shaft 1 drives a torque converter impellor 2 and may be clutched by hydraulic clutch 6 to the first sun gear 7 which may be held by a band brake 8. The turbine 3 of the converter drives the second sun gear 16, larger than sun gear 7, which is engaged by planet gears 15 meshing with larger planet gears 28 engaged with the sun gear 7. Both sets of intermeshing planet gears are borne on a common carrier 9 connected to a bevel pinion 13 engaging a bevel gear 14 of an axle differential unit; the planets 28 and 15 meshing with ring gears 10 and 17 braked by disc brake 11 and band brake 18 respectively. First gear is engaged by brake 18, the drive from input 1 being through the converter turbine 3, sun gear 16, planets 15 and carrier 9. Second gear is engaged by brake 8, providing a power path 1, 3, 16, 15, 28, stationary sun 7 and output carrier 9. Third gear, which has split-torque is engaged by the clutch 6 which produces drive to the sun 7 from the shaft 1 and to sun 16 from the turbine, through the intermeshed planet gears to carrier 9. Reverse is engaged by brake 11 on ring gear 10, providing reverse rotation of the carrier 9 from sun 16 through planets 15, 28.
