A telescopic stay comprises an inner portion 1 having a non-circular cross-section and an outer portion 2 on which a locking collar 8 is rotatably mounted in such a manner that it cannot move axially on the outer portion, the collar having a non-circular bore in an extension 8x surrounding the inner portion so that rotation of the collar, e.g., by means of a handle 9, causes the inner portion 1 and the extension 8x to bind together to lock the stay in its adjusted position. The collar is located on the outer portion by a pin and slot connection 10, 11. The inner portion is pivoted to a bracket 5 adapted to be attached to a window 6, and the pivot also carries a catch 12 adapted to cooperate with a peg 14 on the window frame to hold the window closed. The catch has a notch 16 which can be engaged with the peg to hold the window slightly open.
