Abstract
971,082. Ball joints. V. LANGEN. June 30, 1961 [July 13, 1960], No. 23788/61. Heading E2F. A ball joint comprises a resilient socket lining 3 extending on both sides of the equator of the ball and meridionally split on one side of the equator to form resilient tongues having extensions in the direction of the polar axis of the ball and out of contact with the surface of the ball, the tongues being pressed into contact with the ball by retaining means surrounding the extensions. Preferably the retaining means is a spring ring 7 located in a peripheral groove 9 in the extensions. The tongues may be located at either end of the socket and the ends of the extensions are preferably surrounded by an annular surface 8 formed in a socket closure plate or in an annular insert 4<SP>1</SP> to limit the outward movement of the tongues: the surface 8 may replace the spring ring 7. The lining may have a peripheral flange 10 held against an annular shoulder 11 in the socket by the insert 4<SP>1</SP>.
