970, 810. Automatic control of tape drives. NIPPON ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Jan. 16, 1963 [Jan. 30, 1962], No. 2046/63. Heading G3R. Magnetic tape loops, whose length depends on the controlled driving of tape-reels, 1, 2 are sensed by photo-electric means 7-11 to derive a signal operating the control motors 30 of mechanical variable speed gears 15 (of the cone-andbelt type) connecting drive motors to the reels 1, 2 so as to maintain the loop-lengths within predetermined limits. An alternative embodiment (not described in detail) substitutes compliance-arm/micro-switch sensing means for the photo-electric system of Fig. 1.
