[Also in Division G3] Magnetic tape 9 is transported at constant speed by controlling the speed of either one of separate take-up and feed spool motors, which are mounted coaxially with their spools 7, 8, in response to signals produced by markings on a roller 11 driven by the tape. The signals may be produced by inductive, capacitive, galvanic or optical means, but preferably the marks comprise ferro-magnetic teeth which are detected by a head M, whose signals are compared at V with reference signals from O to control the selected motor via a control amplifier R. The other motor is energized in the opposite direction, to maintain tension, from a lower voltage source Sp. Fast wind is produced by changing the reference value. The machine can be operated in either direction by a change-over switch a . . . f. The motors may be D.C. or A.C., preferably eddy current, external tubular rotor type.
