Abstract

833,549. Driving magnetic tape. DECCA RECORD CO. Ltd. Oct. 13, 1958 [July 12, 1957], No. 22162/57. Class 40 (2). [Also in Group XVI] The reels 10, 11 of a tape-drive system are driven by independently controlled velodynetype servomotors, which respond to photoelectric sensing means 30, 32 and 31, 33 respec. tively when translucent parts of the tape, near its ends produce control signals. The reels are also controlled by other photo-electric sensing means 22-29, by means of which, loops of tape of length corresponding to points intermediate between 22, 23 and 26, 27 respectively are maintained in the boxes 14, 20, so that a portion of the tape, defined by the loops, may be rapidly moved past the heads 17, 18 by the capstans 15, 19 without hindrance in starting due to the relatively high inertia of the reels 10, 11, and their associated motors. For loading and unloading full lengths of tape, electronic and relay control means (Fig. 2, not shown) first wind the reels slowly in opposite directions to take up the slack, after which rapid winding is possible without fear of snatch breaking the tape. The signal due to the translucent part of the tape, near its end, returns the driving motor to its previous slow speed to complete the winding. A paper delivered to the I.E.E. is referred to.
