Abstract

969,571. Flexible shafts. FLEXIBLE DRIVE & TOOL CO. Ltd. Sept. 6, 1963 [Sept. 7, 1962], No. 34347/62. Heading F2U. A coupling for a flexible drive shaft having a flexible core 12 within a sheath 10 comprises a hollow casing 14 with an axially elongated element 42 for attachment to the end of the core and a sleeve 52 attached to the end of the sheath and capable of limited axial movement in relation to the casing 14 to accommodate curvature of the shaft. The casing consists of two portions 16, 18 connected by a threaded portion 26, the end of portion 16 having an internal thread 50 providing a screw connection for the end of the shaft. A bearing 34 is secured between members 16, 18 and carries the elongated element of which the end 42 is secured to the end of the core 12, while the other end 44 is engageable with the driving or driven member. The sleeve 52 is retained in the end of casing 14 by a circlip 62 and is formed with a portion 58 of reduced diameter to permit the desired axial movement of the end of the sheath 10.
