Abstract

Torque limiters of the friction type use a number of components and are relatively costly. These problems are overcome by using a helicoidal spring whose outer surface acts against a sleeve while the inner surface acts against a shaft. Torque is limitted in both directions of rotation. A coupling comprises a helicoidal spring (1) of which one end is held by friction on the end of a shaft (2). The other end similarly acts against the inner surface of a sleeve (3). The coil is a truncated cone shape with the smaller diameter end mounted on the shaft. The shaft and sleeve have an annular channel (5, 6) in which the end turns of the coil engage.
