Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of general formula: <FORM:0969195/C1/1> wherein (a) R, R1 and R2 are each a lower (1-3C) alkyl group one of which may be substituted by a hydroxyl group, or (b) R is a lower alkyl or hydroxy-lower alkyl group and R1 and R2 are joined together to form with the nitrogen atom a saturated heterocyclic ring containing 4 or 5 ring carbon atoms, and wherein X is a non-toxic anion of an acid, the values of R, R1 and R2 being chosen so that they are not all methyl groups; and their preparation by reaction of appropriate compounds of general formula: <FORM:0969195/C1/2> with a compound R-X where X is an anion which is non-toxic or can subsequently be replaced by such; and those tertiary amines of general Formula II in which R1 and R2 are not both methyl or ethyl groups; and their preparation by reacting in a solvent 1-chloroindane with a compound HNR1R2. Also mentioned are optical isomers of compounds I and the preparation of compounds I where X is chloride by reacting 1-chloroindane in a solvent with a compound NRR1R2. Starting materials prepared are 1-chloroindane by reacting indene with dry hydrogen chloride, which on reaction with dimethylamine yields 1-(dimethylamino)-indane. Pharmaceutical compositions comprise compounds I in association with pharmaceutical carriers. The compounds are sympathetic blocking agents and may treat hypertension. Compositions containing compounds of the invention generally are mentioned.
