Abstract

967,729. Moulding thermo-plastic sheet material; seaming non-metallic sheet material. H. A. ROHDIN. Dec. 13, 1960, No. 42794/60. Headings B5A and B5K. [Also in Division B8] An apparatus forms " bubble " or " blister " packs by moulding recesses in a web, dropping articles to be packaged in the recesses and closing them by a sealed on card. Forming " blisters."-The web 12 is fed by reciprocating jaws 26 between holding jaws 20, 28 and beneath a radiant heater 22, Fig. 1. The heated web then passes to moulding means 24 comprising male and female dies 120, 134 operating on either side of a frame 124, Figs. 3B, 4. The dies approach each other distorting the web until the frame is sealed between them. Vacuum is then applied through the frame to draw the web against formers 126. Pressure may be applied from within the female member. The members 126 may be foraminous and subjected to vacuum and stripping pressure. They may be temperature controlled. Seaming on covers.-In one embodiment, Fig. 2, used where each card is larger than the blister portion, the blistered web is slit longitudinally at 60 and fed by rollers 62 and jaws 68 to cutters 70 which cut off individual blisters with their surrounding flanges. Divergent guides 72 lead the blisters to conveyers 100 each comprising sections 104, Fig. 7, apertured to various blister shapes and into which the blisters are inserted by a member 74. A filler 76 deposits articles in the blisters and cards 82 are placed on them by means 81 and tack-sealed in position. Final sealing is performed by upper and lower jaws 84, the lower comprising a heated cellular arrangement, Figs. 5, 6, the partitions of which press with their upper edges against the sections 104 round the blister peripheries. The sections 104 may be of polytetrafluorethylene cloth tensioned by springs round conveyer links 102 (Fig. 9, not shown). Ejectors 86 remove the packages.
