Abstract

1398811 Sheet forming MAHAFFY & HARDER ENG CO 10 Jan 1973 [12 Jan 1972] 1368/73 Heading B5A [Also in Division B8] In a continuous-motion packaging machine, thermoplastics web 19 is held by clips 72, 73 over frames 11 on endless conveyer 13 passing through a thermo-forming section 18 where web 19 is pressed by dies into frames 11 to form open flanged trays, a loading section 21 where the trays are mechanically or manually filled, a module 45 where web is punched into lid blanks by press 48, a sealing section 22 where lids are heat-sealed to the trays after evacuation and the packages are severed from the webs, and finally to trimming section 25 via pick-off device 23. The thermo-forming elements of section 18 and the sealing and evacuation elements of section 22 are reciprocated vertically and horizontally on sliding carriages actuated by rotary cams to synchronize with the motion of conveyer 13. The thermo-forming dies and the heat-sealing elements are water-cooled. Differrent sized dies may be used to form different tray shapes.
