In a bed settee comprising seat and back frames 14, 18 mounted on a base 10 by linkage 22 for selective movement between a settee and a bed position, the linkage includes a pair of seat hinge plates 30, connected to a pair of back hinge plates 31 by hinge pivots 32, a pair of forward links 25 each pivotally connected at 33 to a hinge plate 30 forward of and below the hinge pivot 32 and pivoted at 24 on the end of base 10 for movement between a rearwardly inclined settee position (Fig. 1) and a forwardly inclined bed position (Fig. 2), a pair of rearward links 27 each pivoted to the base 10 at 26 and pivoted to the hinge plate 31 at a point 34 which is above and behind the hinge pivot 32 in settee position and below and behind 32 in bed position, and a pair of guide links 29 each pivoted to a hinge pivot 32 and to a pivot 28 between the links 25, 27, the guide links 29 occupying a rearwardly inclined settee position and a slightly forwardly inclined bed position. The linkage 22 in the settee position locks the seat and back frames 14, 18 against movement towards the bed position by an application of rearward pressure on the back frame, this movement being initiated only by elevating the rear of the seat frame 14 relative to the base 10. An operating lever 37 is provided for this purpose. The forward link 25 is a bell crank. A tension spring 35 has one end connected to an arm 25a of the link 25 while its opposite end it connected to a spring stud 36. The spring 35 in moving between settee and bed position crosses a line between pivot 24 and stud 36 and is thus under tension in both positions so as to resiliently urge the linkage 22 from each position towards the other, thus easing the initial movement in either direction.
