Abstract

966,364. Telescopic rams. COMMERCIAL SHEARING & STAMPING CO. June 5, 1963 [June 25,1962], No. 22331/63. Heading F1P. In a multistage telescoping cylinder unit comprising a plurality of concentric cylinders 12, 13, 14, 11 and a piston member 10 slidable in the smallest cylinder 11, the cylinders are continuously urged into the telescoped position by fluid under pressure admitted to the annular spaces 13a, 14a, 11a, 21 between the walls of adjacent cylinders, and control means such as a valve (Fig. 5 not shown) operative to deliver fluid under pressure to the smallest cylinder and/or the other cylinders to thereby extend the piston 10 and/or the cylinders against the continuously applied urge. The piston member 10 is provided with three inlets 18, 25 and 30. The inlet 18 communicates fluid under pressure to the annular spaces between the cylinders through an annular passage 19 and radial passages 20, 11b, 11c, 14b, 14c, 13b, 13c. The inlet 25 communicates fluid under pressure via an axial duct 26 to a space 27 within the cylinders and the inlet 30 communicates fluid under pressure to a space 33 between the smallest cylinder and the piston member 10.
