Abstract

965,560. Two-part couplings; needle-point couplings. CANNON ELECTRICAL CO. Jan. 25, 1961 [Sept. 16, 1960], No. 2896/61. Heading H2E. Each half of a multi-contact coupling comprises one or more cellulose acetate modules 20 mounted in an outer shell, Fig. 2 (not shown), by a metal band, Figs. 10-13 (not shown) which band embraces the module, or assembly of modules, and includes a spring tongue to lock into the shell. Each module accommodates a number, e.g. six, contacts in passages, the front walls being partially cut away, as shown, in a symmetrical manner so that one module (when inverted) will mate with another and totally enclose the contacts, Fig. 20, which are of the hermaphrodite type and apart from the crimping arrangement are as disclosed in Specification 947,376. The modules are made in a 2 : 1 aspect ratio so that they can be assembled by means of studs and holes 94, 96 in various combinations; Fig. 25 (not shown), illustrates 114 possibilities. The outer shells may be flanged for panel mounting or provided with a cord grip, Fig. 19 (not shown), and include keyways for correct coupling. To secure a wire to the contact, portions 158 are crimped round the wire and lances 160 pierce the insulation.
