Abstract
965,279. Selective printing. CLARY CORPORATION. Aug. 17, 1961 [Aug. 29, 1960], No. 29719/61. Heading B6F. Relates to apparatus including intermittently rotated members 16, 19, Fig. 1, for drawing superposed flexible record strips 11, 12 from a supply bin 20 past a printing head 13, the strips being discharged to separate bins 18, 21. A spring 9, bearing on the strips and located between head 13 and feeding members 16, 19, imposes a drag on the strips. The strips have lateral feed perforations and may have lateral embossed parts to help them to adhere together. Feed of inner strip 12, Fig. 2.-Strip 12 is threaded between a guide 58 and a friction surface 26 on roller 16, driven intermittently by a solenoid, and then engaged by sprocket teeth 50 carried by roller 19 driven from roller 16 by belt 52, teeth 50 engaging the lateral perforations in the record strip. The initial movement of teeth 50 tightens the strip on to surface 26 which then also feeds the strip. The effective diameter of surface 26 is slightly larger than that of teeth 50 so that the former advances the strip a little faster than teeth 50 do and thus strain is removed from the strip perforations. Feed of outer strip 11, (Figs. 2 and 7).-Surface 26 is flanked by freely rotatable sprockets 10, the teeth 17 of which engage in the strip perforations so that the movement of strip 12 positively drives these sprockets. Since teeth 17 also engage the perforations in strip 11, that strip is also advanced and is then led between plates 58 and 61 to bin 18. Sprockets 10 are eccentrically mounted on the shaft of roller 16 so that teeth 17 stand proud of surface 26 over the desired arc only. Threading.-To thread strip 11, plate 61 can be swung down about pivot 65 against spring 66 and is latched to thread strip 12, longitudinally slidable lock rods 76, 77 are withdrawn to allow bottom plate 74 to be swung down about pivot 75. Line-spacing.-Manual feed is effected by depressing a lever (not shown) which rotates plate 84, Fig. 7, and hub 85 about shaft 23 of roller 16. A second hub 87 is aligned with hub 85 and is keyed to shaft 23. A one-way clutch effect is provided between hubs 85, 87 by a helical spring 89 surrounding both and secured to the former. Plate 84, when released is restored by a spring. Repeated depression of the lever gives intermittent feed.
