This invention relates particularly autographic registers of the type in which the duplicating stripsare drawn from a suitable source of supply across a platen, upon which tickets, or slips, are filled in and a record (original or copy) stored in the machine.
The primary object of the invention is to provide an improved register of comparatively short length adapted to the purpose. The invention is applicable to various kinds of machines of the generalcharacter mentioned above. It may-be used very advantageously in the type'of' machine having provision for storing the original slips and I5 discharging the copies through a lateral discharge orifice. It iinay be employed, also, in machines of the type where ,thejoriginal and a clesiredinumber of copies are'disr charged from the machine andthe lowermost: copy is stored in the machine. In the embooiment shown in the accompanying drawings, the invention is applied to a side-delivery machine which extrudes the copies and retains the original. In the drawings:

The casing A is. of known construction. The platen A and the cover A are pivotally connectedat one lateral edge with the. upper portio-n ota side wall ofthe casing, in the usual imanner. The closure A is connected at the bottom edge with the lower front end portion of the casing by a transverseypivot. 1. In the cycle ofoperations of the machine, the main feed-mechanism B- feeds the strips atorm-length and the strips then remain at rest until the severing and filing are efl'ected.
The auxiliary feed-mechanism D, accordingly, is designed to efi'ect feeding of thesevered slips, seriatim, at proper intervals, i. e., 7
after severance of the slips.
The mechanism D comprises a pair of continuously rotating differential feed- rolls 12 and 13, provided with suitable trunnions 12 and 18 respectively. The feed rolls 12 and 13 are provided W1th u praised spirals'or threads 12 and 13 ,re-

The threads are positioned so that when the rolls are rotated inopposite directions, at the same peripheral or surface'speed, they will intermittently come into opposed relationship for one'complete thread'length and will exert a grippingand feeding action upon an interposed web, as illustrated in Figs- 2 and 1.
' When-the threads are not directly opposed no gripping action is obtained :and the threads will slip over the paper as shown in Figs. 3 and 5.
' While in the present embodiment each roll is shown with a right and left single thread, obviously more groups of threads and multiple threads maybe used without departing from'the spirit of the invention.
The crank shaft 9 is provided with agear 16 which meshes with and drives a larger 2 gear 17 of the'cutter mechanism which in turn drives bothof the feed-mechanisms B and 'D. The lower feed roll '3' of the main feed-mechanism B is provided with a pinion 18 which meshes with and is driven b-y th'e gear 17. Theshaft 12 of the auxiliary feed-' mechanism D projects through the journal 14 and easing A and provides a pivot'for an idler gear 19 which is driven by the. gear 17 and which in turn drives the pinion 2O mounted on the lower shaft 13. The shafts 13 and 12 are provided with'intermeshing gears 21 and 22, which serve to rotate the spirals on the shafts at auniform peripheral speed.
The crank 9*, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7, hasa slot 23 in its end portionto engage'the latch 10 on every 'secondrevolution. The
crank-shaft 9 is provided witha pinion 24 wh1ch meshes with and drives a cam-gear 25,:wh1ch is pivotally' mounted on the casing A and depresses a plunger 10 which presses the latch 10 out of the path of the crankfon l its first revolution, as will be readily understood from thedrawings. A spring 26 is provided to keep the plunger 10 in contact with the cam.

A small transverse shelf 29 is attached to the casing wall to direct the slips from the rolls to a proper position in the compartment A. If desired, the shelf may be pivoted at the-edge nearestthe feed roll and a cam-actuated arm provided to swing theshelf at proper times to assist in filing several slips. Whenthe register perforations in the strips reach the feed disks at B' the feeding will stop and the clamping bar 11 will be lowered'and grip the proupper strip while theblade 11 descends and 'severs the slip; Just prior to the complete only, and no unnecessary limitations should be understood therefrom, but the appended claims should be construed as broadly as permissible, in view of the prior art.
What I regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters'Patent, is:
1. Ina machine of the character set forth:
a casing equipped with a platen and having a filing compartment; main feed-mechanism operative to feed strips across and project themnbeyond the platen; strip severing means; and auxiliary feed-mechanism intermittently effective to grip and feed severed slips'rearwardly into said filing compartment.
'2. A machine as specified in claim 1, in
which the main feed-mechanism operates idly during the severing operation and in which the auxiliary feed-mechanism is continuously actuated and is provided with deferred-action slip-gripping means operative to effect feeding of the slips, seriatim, after severance of the slips.
3. In a machine of the character set forth: a casing equipped with a platen and having a supply compartment beneath said platen; main feed-mechanism at the upper front portion of said casing; a filing compartment in the lower front portion of said casing; stripsevering means in advance of the main feedmechanism; and auxiliary feed-mechanism vdisposed near the front portion of said filing compartment and intermittently opera-- tive to grip severed slips and complete the feeding thereof into said filing compartment. 4. In a machine of the character set forth:
a casing-equipped with a platen; main feedmechanism mounted at the upper front portion of said casing and operative to feed strips across the platen and project them past themain feed-mechanism and then to work idly; a cutter actuated in timed relation with respect to said feed-mechanism:
means for guiding the proiected slip and turning it in a rearward direction while it is being projected by said feed-mechanism: a filing compartment in the lower portion of the casing extending rearwardly bevond the main feed-mechanism: and auxiliary feed-mechanism interposed between the slipguiding means and said filing compartment and operative to complete the feeding of the severed slip into the filing compartment.
5. A machine as specified in claim 4, in which the auxiliary feed-mechanism comprises a pair of continuously rotating differential feed rolls equipped with spirals which come into gripping and feeding relation intermittently.
6. In an autographic register: a casing having a supply compartment, an underlying filing compartment, and a lateral delivery chute; a platen mounted on said casing; means for drawing a plurality of strips over said platen and projecting one of said strips into said chute; and means for feeding one of said strips around the chute into said filing compartment.
