Abstract

964,120. Ionization manometers. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. April 13, 1962 [April 17, 1961], No. 14390/62. Heading HID. In an ionization manometer, the gas is ionized between two apertured diaphragms 4, 5 by a magnetically-concentrated electron beam passing through the diaphragm apertures. The ions are collected by an electrode 11 arranged laterally of the electron beam between the diaphragms 4, 5 and out of direct line of sight of the electron-collecting area of an anode 10 located beyond diaphragm 5. The voltage applied between diaphragm 5 and anode 10 is sufficient to drive ions liberated from the anode towards the cathode 1 under the influence of the magnetic beam-concentrating field 15 so that these ions do not strike the collector electrode 11. As shown, diaphragms 4, 5 form part of a metal box 8 within the open end of which is arranged the ion collector 11 connected to amplifier and measuring instruments 18 and screened by members 13, 14. Dimensions, operating potentials and magnetic field strengths are given, and pressures of 10<SP>-2</SP> to 10<SP>-14</SP> Torr can be measured.
