Abstract

963,971. Injection - moulding machines. FAIREY ENGINEERING Ltd. July 27, 1960 [April 27, 1959], No. 14374/59. Heading B5A. A mould closing apparatus comprises a plate 10 fixed to a base 11, a platen 12 reciprocable by a piston/cylinder unit 16, 17, auxiliary jacks 27, 28 to connect the platens with clamping units 20, and piston/cylinder units 38, 37 operable to rotate cranks 40 and turn eccentric pins 43 to apply the final clamping pressure to the platens and the mould halves therebetween. The piston/cylinder unit 16, 17 moves the platen 12 carrying one mould half towards the platen 10 carrying the other mould half, the jacks 27, 28 locate clamping rods 23 in slots 22 in platen 12, and the fans clamping nuts 29 and locking screws 32 are tightened. The central part of each pin 43 to which each crank 40 is splined and the parts 44 which form a bearing for each rod 23 are coaxial on an axis 47 and the portions 45 of each pin are on an axis 46 and form a bearing for members 50 which are connected to the platen 10 so that actuation of units 38, 37 moves the axis 47 and hence rods 23 to the left and provides the final clamping pressure. Each clamping unit 20 may be provided with a strain gauge having an automatic or manual cut-out.
