Abstract

963,797. Rail track ballast-cleaning machines. A. SCHEUCHZER. July 12, 1962 [July 27, 1961], No. 26911/62. Heading E1G. A machine for cleaning railway track ballast comprises an endless chain excavator 6 with blades 11 which move ballast to one side of the track where spokes 24 carried by an endless screw 23 feed it to a screen 21 of mesh dimensioned to retain ballast which is still usable. This ballast accumulates behind the screw and is fed by a rake, mounted on the same shaft 32 as the screw and rotated by the same motor 34 to a device 7 similar to the excavator 6 for replacing ballast beneath the track. The frame 1, 3 of the machine carries slides 4 which run on the sleepers 5 and mounted on the top plates of the members 6 and 7 are rollers 17 spring mounted to maintain contact with the underface of the sleepers regardless of the thickness of the sleepers or the digging depth of the excavator. This depth is controlled by hydraulic cylinders between the beams of the frame and the members 6 and 7. Lateral displacement of the frame relative to the rails 2 is prevented by cross members (not shown) on the frame engaging the outer faces of the rails. Ropes 28 secured to the frame of which only one is shown are drawn along by a winch. Specification 292,981 is referred to.
