Abstract

543,652. Magnesium. ABBEY, A. (Dow Chemical Co.). Sept. 5, 1940, No. 13904. [Class 82 (i)] Magnesium is obtained by heating to about 1300-1500‹C. in an inert atmosphere and preferably under reduced pressure a mixture comprising magnesia, lime, and a reducing agent containing silicon or aluminium or both, the proportions of the ingredients of the charge being such that the reducing agent is substantially equivalent to the magnesia and that the slag formed comprises 30-53 per cent. of lime, 36-50 per cent. of silica, and 2-25 per cent. of alumina. The magnesia and lime may be present in the charge as calcined dolomite, and the charge may also include silica, alumina, and less than 5 per cent. of fluorspar. The reducing agent may be silicon, aluminium, or mixtures thereof, or ferro-silicon, ferro-aluminium, or alumino-silicon.
