960,876. Motor vehicle steering gear. REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT. Aug. 25, 1960 [Sept. 1, 1959; May 17, 1960], No. 29399/60. Heading B7H. A steering column 2 is mounted in a bracket 3, 3<SP>1</SP> which is able to pivot about a shaft 4 so that the column may be swung laterally. Drive from the steering shaft is transmitted through a pair of bevel wheels 5 and 6 to the shaft 4 which is connected to the steering linkages. The column may be additionally supported by a roller 9, Fig. 2, which runs in a guide 10 and is connected to the column by arms 7 and 8. Means for locking the column in a given position may be provided. An alternative support, Fig. 3, comprises a pair of spherical rollers 15<SP>1</SP> and 15 disposed on either side of a plate 13. Locking means comprising a cam 18 for urging the roller shaft 16 against a fixed stop 19 are provided. The locking means may be connected by links or a flexible cable to the door of the vehicle so as to be operated by opening the door beyond a given extent. The column may be spring-urged to the laterally displaced position or may be displaced and returned to its original position on opening and closing the door by a link 33.
