Abstract

871,358. Motor vehicles. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. April 8, 1960 [April 17, 1959], No. 13158/59. Classes 79(2) and 79(5). Each of the wheels 2 of a truck is mounted for steering movement in a bracket 3 attached to a member 7 pivotally supported in a bearing member 8, the rear group or pair of wheels being connected together and driven by a chain 15 from a steering motor 14 and a similar arrangement being provided for the front pair of wheels. Each wheel is separately driven by a hydraulic motor 9, the motors of the rear pair of wheels being controlled by a member 11 and those of the front pair by a member 10, the speed and direction of the motors being determined by the extent of movement of operating handles 12 forwards or backwards in a longitudinal direction. The control members for the motors 14 for steering the front and rear wheels are connected to the control members 10 and 11 respectively through a link mechanism, the members 10 and 1.1 being mounted for rotation about longitudinal axes, so that movement of the handles 12 in a transverse plane causes steering movement of the wheels. The positions of the handles 12 for various manoeuvres are shown in Figs. 2, 3, 4 and 5. A jacking system for reducing the load on the wheels when steering through 90 degrees may be provided. Additional pairs of wheels may be provided and controlled in each fore-and-aft group of wheels. The vehicle may have greater width than length.
